She was Karen Walker, a character on the NBC show Will & Grace from 1998-2006 as well as 2017-2021. For her role in this sitcom she has received 8 Primetime Emmy Award nods in Outstanding Female Supporting Actress in the field of a Comedy Series. The actress was also nominated in a variety of categories for her performance which included her nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Awards seven times for Outstanding Acting by a Woman in the field of a Comedy Series. Her first acting credits included the role in a McDonald's commercial with John Goodman. In 1986 she made her television debut on The Ellen Burstyn Show. Then she guest-starred in sitcoms including Seinfeld's Frasier Winds Ned, Stacey Mad About You Caroline in the City 3rd Rock from the Sun as well as Just Shoot Me!. She played the lead character of the Murder She Wrote episode called Coal Miner's Slaughter. In 2012, she hadn't found work in all those years and was terrified since she did not have enough money to cover her rent.
